What does travel mean to you?
We’re excited for The BBZ BLK BK: Alternative Graduation Show, where you join forces with sorryyoufeeluncomfortable to create a graduate show for artists who identify as queer womxn, trans & non-binary artists of Black Ancestry. Tell us a little more about what we can expect from the show.
BBZ BLK BK will platform 10 artists at Copeland Gallery for a week this July. We believe that the commitment and passion of artists who are black and queer deserves to be celebrated. Our intention is to provide a space for artists to be their fullest selves in the presentation of their work, and for audiences to view their work in a space that does not pathologize or other their identities. The show asks both what it means for the artists to identify as they do and also what the qualities of the work are beyond its Blackness and its Queerness.
Why are spaces and exhibitions like this important for London’s culture?
People need to see themselves represented in spaces that don’t often feel particularly welcoming or accessible to them. Art & Creative spaces are for everyone so everyone should have access to them on their own terms.
In August you’re playing Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, what can we expect from BBZ taking on NYC?
For so many Black millennials in Europe, it was common place to grow up centralising African American culture and aspiring to a certain kind of blackness. Now having found our footing and sense of identity that maybe our immigrant predecessors didn’t have the opportunity to, that question is being answered. So we’re creating an immersive installation exploring the themes mentioned above alongside hosting a Stage Takeover and throwing an afterparty in collaboration with a NY based party. Gassed doesn’t even begin to describe how excited we are!
Favourite Trippin experience?
Has to be Glastonbury Festival, we hosted a venue called the Sisterhood in 2017 and it was a proper team bonding experience! Learnt how not to put up a tent lol.
Favourite overseas artist?
We have a current obsession with Bby Mutha from Tennessee.
BBZ in Brazil is on our wish list.
